“He had been suffering from abdominal pain and since there was no hospital, we took him to a healer in another village. Things became complicated, he died there. At the time, there was the rebellion, so we buried him on the spot.”

Local media report his father’s death has inspired him to build a hospital in his village.

The former Southampton man has become a hero in Senegal for his support and financing of hospitals, health facilities, schools and charitable projects.

He is reportedly financing the building of a school in his village which costs 270,000 EUR (227,998 GBP). It is unclear if Mane is paying the full cost of the school.
