PKK Militants Sentenced To Death For Diplomats Murder

Two Kurdish militants seen here assassinating a Turkish diplomat in Iraq have been sentenced to death.

The Kurdistan Regional Government in northern Iraq sentenced the two Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members to death for the murder of Turkish diplomat Osman Kose in the city of Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, in July last year.

The PKK is a Kurdish militant and political organisation based in Turkey and Iraq that is broadly designated as a terrorist group.

Local news outlet ‘Rudaw’ said: “The 2nd Criminal Court in Erbil has charged six people in connection with the killing of an employee of the Turkish Consulate and two other citizens at the Huqqabaz Restaurant in Erbil.

“Two of them were sentenced to death.”

Four other defendants were each sentenced to a year in prison, according to Rudaw.

The unnamed restaurant owner said that the attacker was in plainclothes and was carrying two firearms when he assassinated the dining Turkish diplomat.

The shooting reportedly took place at the popular restaurant Huqqabaz that is in a posh area in Erbil just five minutes from the Turkish Consulate.

It is unclear when the death sentences will be carried out.
