This is the moment a man shows off a jewellery gift that could become a godsend for cheap boyfriends everywhere.

Made from just cut-out holes in a paper, it is held up in the sunshine to create a necklace of pure light on the wearer’s neck.

The inventor – named as Mr Zhang in local media in Zhejiang Province, eastern China – is said to have spent two days crafting it as a gift for his girlfriend.

He told his girlfriend – not named in local media – to put on her best clothes and to get ready for her surprise present.

Afterwards, Zhang arrived and presented her with a box that held a piece of white paper with a stencilled pattern of a necklace on it.

Outdoors he put the cut out in front of her projecting an intricate necklace of light onto her neck.

Zhang later shared on Douyin – China’s version of TikTok – but not everyone praised his inventiveness.

Some users called him a “scheming man” and criticised him for being cheap.

One – ‘Warm heart with sake~’ – wrote: “This is a poor man’s attempt at romance.”

Others, though, were touched by the time and thought he had put into his creation.

Douyin user ‘Chow Kit’ commented: “I, a married woman who has passed the age where things made me emotional, also like it very much! If my husband would bother to make one for me, I’d be crazy about it!

“If you have everything, you just want this feeling of being taken care of!”

Later, Zhang wrote a reply in response to all the criticism: “My girlfriend and I are very affectionate and have been in love for many years. We are financially independent and respect each other.

“I will give my girlfriend the best when my financial conditions permit, and I will buy whatever she likes.

” I will also make a lot of small objects to play with her and make her happy.

” I don’t think it’s necessary to post the things I bought. I would rather share the things I made by myself.”
