The father of a murdered 16-year-old girl who was stabbed over 100 times by her boyfriend who has spent decades campaigning for him to stay in jail has criticised officials after he was released.

Fabian Tablado, 43, who stabbed his girlfriend Carolina Alo 113 times in a house in Tigre, around 30 kilometres from the Argentine capital Buenos Aires on 27th May 1996 says he is a new man now, which has included studying law and becoming an Evangelical Christian.

He was sentenced to 24 years in prison, and despite the campaign by his victim’s father, Edgar Alo, he has now been released after serving 23 years, nine months and one dayin prison.

The Argentine justice system employed a new calculation which means he was considered to have served his sentence, leading to outrage from the victim’s dad who said the killer should have been jailed for life.

Alo told reporters: “This man should have died in prison. I have been in the courts for 24 years and carrying out protests so that he remained in prison.”

Convicted killer Tablado told reporters on his release: “I have always wondered why I killed her. I have no answer. I am really sorry. I know the family is not going to forgive me. I know it is hard to believe me, but I’m really sorry.”

At the time of his sentencing, the Argentine penal code categorised the crime as a crime of passion. In the country’s current penal code it would have been categorised as femicide and he would have been jailed for life, according to reports.

He had confessed to killing the teenager when she told him that she did not want to have a baby with him and that she was dating another man.

Tablado married a ‘fan’ in prison in September 2006 and has twin daughters with her. However, the couple reportedly split up after his wife, who has not been named, accused him of abusing her.

He was found guilty of making threats and psychologically abusing his wife and was handed an additional two and a half years in prison.

According to local media, the latest psychological tests show that he is not suffering from psychotic issues and he has normal mental faculties.

The date of the murder has become the National Day of the Prevention of Violent Relationships in Argentina.
