A newborn baby being breastfed in a parked car has died when a reportedly drunk off-duty cop crashed into the vehicle.

The incident took place in the municipality of Itatiba in the southern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo when 27-year-old mum Gerlaine Sodre de Jesus was with her three-year-old daughter and her seven-day-old newborn girl Viviane Sodre da Silva in a car parked in front of a relative’s house.

The mother was breastfeeding the newborn when a car driven by off-duty military policeman Robson Fabiano Gabriel, 47, who was allegedly drunk at the time, crashed into the parked vehicle. Local media report Gabriel is incorporated into the Campinas Firefighters Body.

The baby girl’s father Juliano Xavier da Silva told local media: “Right after my partner got in the car, I saw another vehicle driving very fast towards it. It crashed into our car and sent it flying onto the pavement.”

According to reports, the baby was thrown forwards and the poor week-old tot hit the steering wheel.

The newborn was taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors were unable to save her life.

The mother and her three-year-old daughter were both hurt in the incident, but their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

According to local media, Fabiano Gabriel was arrested and released on bail while awaiting trial in a civilian court as he was off-duty when the incident happened.
