A Ukrainian refugee mum saw her toddler son’s death on a baby monitor after he was stuck in a blazing apartment after they fled to Germany.
The little boy, identified only as Kasper, aged 2, suffocated to death while his father Daniel Z., aged 35, and older brother Oskar, aged 5, ended up seriously injured in the blaze.
The incident happened in the Wesenberger Ring in the city of Berlin, Germany, on Tuesday evening, 17th January.
Reports revealed that the family had moved to Germany only recently after they reportedly packed their bags and fled the war in Ukraine in order to secure a better future.
On the day of the incident, Daniel was reportedly in the basement when his wife Agnieszka, who was not at home, looked at the baby monitor and saw her two-year-old son laying helplessly in his crib in the burning room.
She then immediately tried to reach her husband over the phone, but he did not respond as there was no signal in the basement.
But after the fire alarm went off and the 35-year-old man noticed the fire, he immediately ran inside to save his children.
But as he could not reach Kasper due to the raging flames, he took his older son in his arms and ran outside.
Oskar had reportedly suffered severe smoke inhalation, after which he was placed into a pressure chamber in a hospital in the Friedrichshain quarter.
Daniel was brought to a hospital in the locality of Marzahn, where he was treated for second to third-degree burns.
Meanwhile, while putting the fire out, firefighters found Kasper’s lifeless body and took him to a nearby ambulance.
A police spokesperson said: “Despite the resuscitation that was initiated immediately, the boy died.”
Ten people were saved from the four-story building by a total of 56 firemen that were deployed in the operation.
One of them Katja N., 18, said: “I heard the fire alarm below us and a scream.”
Berlin’s Fire Department said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: “One person died at the scene, the other people were treated by the rescue service.”
The State Criminal Police Office initiated investigations to determine the cause of fire.
