A grieving mother has said that she will never return to her newly bought house after she found her 10-year-old son murdered with his throat slit and hidden in her under-bed storage compartment with his nose and mouth taped shut.
Polish citizen Mirko Tomkow, 44, has been arrested for the murder of the young boy, who was called Matias. The incident took place in the commune of Vetralla , which is located in the province of Viterbo, in central Italy, on Tuesday 16th November.
Albanian maid Marjola Rapaj, 37, had returned home in the afternoon and found her son dead and the boy’s dad in a semi-unconscious state in the next room.
She called the police and he was arrested. It is believed he committed the crime despite a weeks-old restraining order against him, banning him from approaching his estranged wife or child, due to violence committed when he was under the influence of alcohol.
According to reports, the man had only recently been discharged from hospital, where he had been hospitalised with COVID-19.
He had been spotted in a ‘confused state’ in front of his son’s school on the morning of the alleged crime.
The police believe he cut his son’s throat with a knife he took from the cutlery drawer in the home in which he used to live with his wife after the boy’s uncle had dropped the youngster home from school.
The police also believe he attempted to pour flammable liquid on a sheet to set fire to the crime scene and possibly also kill himself, but he fell semi-unconscious before he was able to cause the fire.
It is believed he was under the influence of drugs, medication or alcohol, or some combination of the three when he committed the crime, and doctors were reported to be conducting tests to find out.
The boy’s distraught mother was also reportedly taken to hospital to be treated for shock.
Marjola has since told local media outlet Il Messaggero: “I will never set foot in that house again, I don’t want to go into it anymore.”
Marjola, who is currently being followed by doctors and psychologists, said: “In this moment of great pain I am not able to explain what I am feeling.”
She added: “The pain is devastating. I will never go back to that house, I don’t want to go into it anymore. I can’t think about what happened that terrible day in there.”
