A mother has been arrested for beating her one-year-old baby to death because he would not keep quiet.
The suspect has been named as Mayra Nayret and she was arrested for allegedly killing her baby boy Emiliano in their apartment in the city of Nogales, in the Mexican state of Sonora, on Sunday, 1st January, at around 11.30am.
Prosecutors arrested the suspect on Wednesday, 4th January, after it was determined that she allegedly beat Emiliano around the head until he was unconscious because he would not keep quiet, according to local media.
Nayret allegedly confessed what she had done to her ex-partner, the young boy’s unnamed father, who, in turn, called the police.
An autopsy later determined that the child had been beaten to death and that he had been repeatedly beaten prior to that.
The authorities have taken statements from the 13-month-old boy’s father, forensic experts, and neighbours.
The investigation is ongoing. It was unclear at the time of writing if the suspect had been formally charged.
Prosecutor Claudia Indira Contreras Cordova has urged people to come forwards if they suspect violence being committed against minors, saying: “It is in our hands to help prevent more cases like that of little Emiliano from happening in Nogales. We must help prevent innocent girls and boys from being deprived of their lives as a result of child abuse.
“It is necessary and valuable that any person who has knowledge of the mistreatment of a minor report it immediately to avoid these tragedies that hurt, inflict grief upon and deteriorate our society.”
