This is the moment a curious boy drives off in a parked pedicab and ends up dangling over a canal after crashing off an embankment.

The accident happened in the city of Kunshan in East China’s Jiangsu Province as the five-year-old’s grandmother was speaking on the phone nearby.

Local authorities said the curious boy, who had just come back from nursery school, climbed onto the parked pedicab for fun, but his grandma did not realise the vehicle’s owner had not locked the vehicle.

Video shows the boy starting the engine and driving off in the yellow pedicab with his shocked and worried grandparent giving chase on foot.

The boy races past a security guard who tries in vain to stop the vehicle from crashing through the stone balustrades surrounding the embankments of a nearby canal.

The pedicab crashes off the road and ends up hanging over the water, but the boy manages to hang on to the handlebars and avoids falling into the canal.

The security guard and other arriving witnesses pull the pedicab from behind and stop it from tipping forwards, the video shows.

Local police said the child was not harmed.

Officer Zhu Weihua said the pedicab’s owner was eating in a restaurant and had left the vehicle parked outside.

The boy’s family would foot the bill for the balustrades repairs, Zhu said.
