This is the moment a mum and her three kids jump to safety from the window of their smoke-filled apartment onto a sheet held taut by locals on the street below.

The incident was reportedly caused by electrical fire that broke out at an apartment block in the district of Esenler in the western Turkish city of Istanbul at around 3.30pm on Tuesday, 12th October.

Passersby noticed the blaze and called the fire brigade. However, the fire spread rapidly before firefighters arrived on the scene and it was up to local residents to save the day.

Residents of one of the apartments called for help from their window, and neighbours who heard the shouts fetched what appears to be a large bed sheet from their home.

They and several other locals eager to help are seen in the footage stretching the sheet taut before asking the residents of the apartment to jump one by one.

Three children and their mother are seen jumping onto the sheet, with the first two jumpers hitting the pavement after the sheet breaks their fall, reportedly causing minor injuries.

All the people who jumped out of the window onto the taut sheet were later taken to hospital by ambulance where they were found to be in a good condition.

The fire was reportedly brought under control and then extinguished by local workers armed with fire extinguishers before the arrival of the fire brigade.

It is not reported if there were any other injuries.
