This is the moment cops and medics applaud a 100-year-old woman who is returning to her care home after battling COVID-19 in hospital for nearly a month.

The centenarian, named Carmen, who suffers with other health conditions and is dependent on others, has returned to the DomusVi San Lazaro retirement home where she lives in the city of Santiago de Compostela in the north-western Spanish region of Galicia.

Carmen was diagnosed with COVID-19 on 23rd March at the home and was taken to the La Rosaleda Hospital where she spent almost one month battling the virus.

On 15th April, and ambulance took the elderly woman, who turns 101 years old in August, to the centre where she has lived since 2015.

When she arrived, home carers, police officers and members of the Civil Protection were there to welcome her, as seen in the footage.

A retirement home spokesperson Gloria Garcia Barreiro told Newsflash: “She is alone and does not have any family. She is also very dependent.

“She survived, it is incredible!”

After receiving hospital treatment, Carmen tested negative for the virus twice and she was allowed to return home, however she will need to spend another month in isolation.

According to reports, the home has reported 82 cases of suspected COVID-19 and the patients are being treated both in hospitals and at the centre.

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, Spain has registered 184,948 cases of COVID-19 and 19,315 related deaths.
