This is the moment suspected members of a deadly Mexican cartel led by notorious drug lord ‘El Mencho’ hand out food and supplies to poor locals who line up to thank them.

Locals said it was members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) that were handing out food in Tecalitlan in the western Mexican state of Jalisco as seen on the propaganda video.

In the clip, the cartel members are seen handing shopping bags to residents before a large crowd that lines up to receive their aid.

The video shows several people thanking drug lord and suspected cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, aka ‘El Mencho’.

A woman holding a food bag is heard saying: “Thank you Mr Mencho for these beautiful groceries that you gave to the people of Tecalitlan.”

An elderly woman comments: “Thank you Mr Mencho.”

Some of the footage seems to have been filmed by drones and many netizens said the CJNG is making propaganda videos to promote their social activities.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador showed his opposition to the drug cartel assisting residents in the state of Jalisco while residents criticised his government for lack of action.

An unnamed local told the news channel ‘Canal 6’: “It is not ideal, but it is happening out of necessity. If it was left up to the government, we would all die of starvation. The government offers very little and if they do, it is extremely difficult to get.”

President Lopez Obrador told local media: “I want to tell you that these organised criminal gangs handing out shopping do not help. Ending their criminal activities helps.”

According to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University, there have been 23,471 cases of COVID-19 and 2,154 related deaths in Mexico.
