Prosecutors said he deliberately ran his Daewoo Rexton SUV into crowds of shoppers in Graz at speeds of up to 90mph.

He then climbed out of the vehicle and started randomly stabbing bystanders, including elderly people and police officers.

His dying victims included a 28-year-old man, a 25-year-old woman, and a boy aged just four.

Oddball Rizvanovic appeared at his trial dressed head to toe in white and claimed he had panicked when he heard what he thought were gunshots.

He had arrived in Austria with his parents as refugees from the Bosnian War in 1993.
