South African Man Shoots Wife Saying She Was Intruder

This young woman has allegedly been shot dead by her husband who claimed that he thought she was an intruder when he pulled the trigger.

The shooting happened in South Africa where which is also where Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp dead in 2013 after also claiming that he thought she was an intruder hiding in the bathroom.

The latest incident happened in the city of Kempton Park in South Africa’s Gauteng province when mother-of-two Hlengiwe Masango, 30, was allegedly shot and killed by her husband, who has not been named in reports, in the early hours of the morning last week.

She leaves behind a three-year-old girl and an eight-month-old boy while her 33-year-old husband has been arrested.

He claims it was a mistake however the young woman’s family insist that it was a clear-cut case of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). The shooting has also sparked a social media campaign for justice under the hashtag #JusticeForHlengiwe.

One of her relatives, cousin Sine Mhlongo, said: “When I arrived at the scene, we found that she had been shot twice on the chest, and he claims he thought there was an intruder in the house. My cousin was fully dressed; it seems they were having an argument. He lied with this story to cover up.”

Local police Captain Mavela Masondo who is leading the investigation said that a man had been arrested in regard to the shooting.

He said that the arrested man had a licensed gun and had grabbed it when he thought he heard sounds of an intruder, and then realised that he had shot his wife.

The investigation is ongoing.
