This shocking image released by German police shows the corpse of a woman that a man pushed into a hospital in a wheelchair claiming she was still alive.

The incident took place at a clinic in the Westend borough of the German capital Berlin and police say the woman had in fact died at least a day earlier.

According to the police, a man pushed the corpse in a wheelchair into the hospital, saying that the woman, who is believed to have been between 80 and 95 years old and weighed just 40 kilogrammes (88 lbs), was his wife and that she was short of breath.

The man then left the building immediately.

The police have not yet identified the man and the woman’s identity is also currently unclear as her identification documents were missing.

The police shared the image of the woman online – which only happens rarely because there are strict privacy laws in Germany – in the hopes that someone will recognise her.

The police said: “At the very least, in the last few months of her life, she was only sitting or lying down.”

The police also asked if anyone had seen the wheelchair, which was built from scratch and covered with green velvet. The woman’s clothing was also almost entirely handmade.
