A young mother has been shot dead by a co-worker after she told him she did not want to be friends.

The murder took the life of 23-year-old female victim Handan Bul, who was the mother of a three-year-old girl and who worked at a factory in the Bozuyuk district of the provincial capital Bilecik, located in the province of the same name in north-western Turkey.

Her alleged killer, co-worker Yusuf Ugur, 30, then took his own life by pointing a gun at his head and pulling the trigger himself.

He had made several advances on Ms Bul after learning of her divorce three years ago saying he wanted to be friends, according to local media.

Ms Bul had repeatedly rejected Ugur but had agreed to meet him that evening to make her stance clear that she did not want to be friends or to be romantically involved.

Ugur drove to her house on Monday night (21st September) and took her to a nearby wood in Bozalan village to talk.

He then shot her dead in the car before turning the gun on himself, according to forensic investigators.

Ms Bul was buried in her hometown of Eskisehir at Asri Cemetery. Ugur was buried in the same cemetery on Wednesday afternoon.

The murder-suicide has caused an outpouring of grief in Eskisehir along with renewed calls for more to be done to protect women in Turkey.

Campaigners are urging the judiciary to be stricter with enforcing existing laws, but instead it seems the government contemplating going the other way and withdrawing from Istanbul Conventionwhich offers protection to women against domestic violence.
