This is the moment a man has a lucky escape when falling blocks of masonry miss him by millimetres but pummel a van about to park in the street.
The incident took place in the neighbourhood of Ismet Kaptan in the district of Cankaya in the western Turkish province of Izmir at around 9am on 29th November.
Huge blocks fell from the third-floor balcony of an old hotel that was closed for renovation after heavy storms weakened the structure, according to local reports.
As seen in the CCTV footage, a man, name not reported, was playing with his phone on the pavement when he suddenly looks up and manages to run to safety before falling blocks fall around him.
Meanwhile, the falling masonry is seen pummelling a van as the driver attempts to park on the street.
Local media said the falling material damaged three vehicles in total and said it was mostly concrete blocks.
A family of four in the van was unharmed in the incident.
Resul Calis, 35, married father of two, whose vehicle got damaged, said: “This place has been under renovation for over a year. People walk near it all the time. It could have been worse. Urgent measures should be taken as soon as possible.”
He added: “We only suffered material damage. We’ll file a complaint against the hotel owner.”
It is unclear whether the police have launched an investigation into the incident.
