This is the bizarre moment looters steal mayonnaise right off the road after a motorway lorry crash in South Africa.

The truck had shed its load of glass jars of the salad spread blocking the freeway near Johannesburg on 11th March.

And footage of the messy aftermath shows looters picking through the shattered jars for anything they could take away.

Some manage to find undamaged jars which they are seen carrying away by the armful.

But others can be seen apparently picking through broken glass to scrape mayo from the tarmac onto sheets of cardboard and then running off with it.

One baffled bystander filming the looters says: “It’s just mayonnaise.”

They appear completely oblivious to the huge number of lorries and cars trying to make their way down the road around the crash site.

The crowd got so out of hand, according to local media, that the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department had to force looters out so a clean up crew could make the road safe.

It is currently unclear what caused the lorry to overturn and no injuries have reported.
