The killer of an 18-year-old woman whose dead body he threw in a well after raping her has been sentenced to life in prison in Spain.

A court in the city of Santiago in the north-western Spanish region of Galicia sentenced Jose Enrique Abuin Gey, also known as ‘El Chicle’ (‘The Chewing Gum’), to life imprisonment for killing 18-year-old Diana Quer in 2016.

According to local media, the sentence can be reviewed in the future and the defendant would serve a 10-year probation period if he was ever released from prison.

Reports said that Abuin Gey premeditated the sexual assault, murder and concealment of the body.

Diana Quer disappeared on 22nd August 2016 and was later found in December 2017 in a well 200 metres from the killer’s house after being left in the dank water for over 500 days.

Reports said Abuin Gey was arrested during Christmas 2017 after he confessed to running over another victim and also hiding her dead body in a well.

In 2015, he was also sentenced to five years in prison for assault, according to reports.

During the recent murder trial, prosecutors proved that Quer had been sexually assaulted as her body was found naked and she had been strangled with a bridle that was wrapped around the victim’s hair.

Abuin Gey, who is married and has a daughter, will have to pay compensation of 130,000 EUR (110,535 GBP) to the victim’s parents and 40,000 EUR (34,000 GBP) to her sister, according to local media.

The victim’s father said on Twitter: “Diana smiles today in Heaven. Her rapist and murderer has been condemned to Revisable Life Imprisonment, a law that will save lives as this person will not attack innocent girls again. That is Diana’s legacy, thank you for supporting the fight.”
