A nine-year-old schoolgirl has died in Egypt after her teacher reportedly beat her over the head with a stick for making a spelling mistake.

Her father claims that school staff then dumped the critically ill youngster outside the family home, bleeding and unconscious.

Tragic Basmala Osama Ali Othman died in hospital a few days after the beating over an error in her Arabic class, reported local media.

Her death has caused widespread outrage in Egypt and calls for justice, according to local media.

Little Basmala attended the Taranis al-Arab primary school in Dakahlia province, north-east of the Egyptian capital Cairo.

She spent eight days in hospital suffering from a brain bleed before she died on 9th October.

Her 50-year-old Arabic teacher- named in local media only as Samir – allegedly hit her over the head with a wooden stick three times after she made a spelling mistake on the blackboard in front of the class.

The teacher is said to be well known for carrying a wooden stick and for behaving violently towards pupils, according to local media.

The Egyptian human rights activist Osama Rushdi has said in a tweet that teacher’s actions were “dehumanising” and said that the stick was “deadly”.

Basmala’s dad, who has not been named, said that his little girl suffered from a brain bleed and fell into a coma after the vicious beating.

He claimed that the school principal tried to treat her instead of calling an ambulance, making her condition worse.

The nine-year-old girl was then taken in a motorised tricycle by another teacher and dumped outside her home, bleeding and unconscious, according to her father.

Basmala’s dad filed a complaint at the El-Senbellawein police station in Dakahlia, with the authorities then detaining one of the teachers for four days while they carried out their investigation.

The teacher was then reportedly suspended from teaching for three months.

The primary school’s principal was also suspended, for an unknown period of time, for failing to inform the police about the attack on the young girl.

Reda Hegazy, the Minister of Education of Egypt, has offered his condolences to the family.

But the incident has reportedly prompted outrage in Egypt, with many calling for an end to corporal punishment and pushing for the family to seek justice for Basmala’s death.

It is currently unclear if the police are still investigating the case.
