These images show a man with a bread knife sticking out of his stomach after he plunged the blade inside himself at a bus stop.

The incident took place in the district of Beyoglu on the European side of Istanbul situated in north-western Turkey when the man started self-harming with a knife at a bus stop, according to local media.

The unnamed man from Azerbaijan reportedly ended up thrusting the bread knife into his abdomen and stunned bystanders immediately called the emergency services.

A team of police officers and paramedics arrived at the bus stop and took control of the unusual situation.

Medics left the foreign object in the man’s body so that it could be carefully removed under surgery and helped him to a nearby ambulance, according to local media.

The man, who reportedly has mental health issues, was then rushed to hospital where he is still receiving treatment.

Photos released by local media show the man being helped into an ambulance by paramedics with a knife handle apparently protruding from his abdomen.

There have been no further updates on the man’s current condition or whether the authorities are investigating the incident.
