A bizarre cat and capybara – the world’s largest rodent – themed cafeteria has opened in Tokyo shortly after the capital city welcomed the first piglet-themed coffeehouse.
While cafes where piglets roam free are considered a novelty in the central-eastern Japanese capital Tokyo, cat-themed coffeehouses are far more common.
However, the city’s first cat and capybara, the world’s largest rodent, coffeehouse has opened its doors in the district of Kichijoji.
Called the ‘Capy Neko Cafe’, ‘neko’ meaning ‘cat’, the venue allows clients to play with the felines and roaming capybara as they enjoy a coffee or snack.

The cafe affords a number of cosy ledges and hammocks for the felines to enjoy a cat nap if they want some ‘me time’ away from the cooing clientele as they are only allowed to pet the animals if they are approached by them, according to reports.
Meanwhile, Tawashi the large capybara roams the coffeehouse freely as well and has a special napping coach if the rodent gets tired of all the cafe chatter.
Laid-back Tawashi also gets on well with all the cats, according to reports.
A one-hour sitting at the cafe reportedly costs adults 2,200 JPY (15.4 GBP) while a half-hour slot is priced at 1,100 JPY (7.7 GBP)
Last year, a swine-themed cafe where clients can enjoy coffee in the company of dozens of cute roaming piglets opened in Tokyo.
According to local media, the ‘Mipig Cafe’ opened in the ward of Meguro and customers can enjoy a coffee or snack as cute piglets run about and frolic among the tables.
For 30 minutes in Mipig Cafe, clients pay an entrance fee of 1,000 JPY (7 GBP) and have to order at least one drink or food option from the menu, according to reports.
