This is the moment police find a 4WD on a pedestrian bridge over a motorway after its driver tried using it for a u-turn and got stuck.

Authorities in the city of Urumqi, which is the capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in north-western China, were dispatched to the city’s Ring Expressway after receiving reports of the stunt on 5th April.

Footage shows police officers arriving to find the white Suzuki Jimny atop the footbridge near Yan’an Road Service Area.

Driver Mr Li explained that he had driven up the wrong slip road and ended up going in the opposite direction of his intended destination.

In order to save time, he decided to do a ‘U-turn’ by driving across the footbridge and coming down the other side.

However, service area staff spotted him halfway as he began to make the climb up the steps. They called police, who intercepted him on the bridge.

According to reports, the pedestrian bridge has a load bearing capacity of about 1,000 kilogrammes, which is roughly the weight of a Suzuki Jimny.

Mr Li has had his driving licence confiscated after being given 12 demerit points. He will now serve a driving ban before being allowed to redo his tests.

Urumqi police also fined him 200 RMB (23 GBP).

Mr Li is asked to carefully drive his Jimny back down the footbridge as the video ends.
