This is the moment a Hyundai driver in Russia is filmed going almost 70 mph towards oncoming traffic down the wrong side of a motorway.

The bizarre incident took place outside the city of St Petersburg in north-western Russia’s Leningrad Oblast region and was recorded on a smartphone by an onlooker.

Footage shows a white Hyundai Solaris travelling at around 110 kph (68 mph) down the wrong side of the motorway.

A male voice in the background says: “He is driving at 110 kph for real. I think he might ram into someone soon.”

Local media report that it is unclear how the man ended up in the lane or why he continued driving in the wrong direction.

The person who recorded the video, whose name is not reported, said that the drivers on the other side had to quickly change their trajectory in order to avoid the Hyundai.

Reports say that luckily the man did not cause an accident but the video caught the eye of the police.

Local media report he now risks receiving a fine of 500,000 RUB (5,425 GBP) and having his driver’s license taken of him for up to six months.

A guest user of a local Internet forum commented: “People like him deserve to get run over by a lorry.”
