This is the moment a panicking pensioner loses control of his car outside a busy market and mows down three pedestrians and 30 scooters while going backwards.

The motorist, identified only as Mr Lee, 84, crashed into three women during the incident, including female scooter rider Ms Chiu, 39, who was later declared dead after having been pinned underneath his green Toyota Tercel.

CCTV footage captured yesterday (24th March) shows Mr Lee’s vehicle reversing at speed on the road outside Zhulian Market, which is in the city of Hsinchu in north-western Taiwan.

He knocks the first scooter rider off her vehicle before slamming into Ms Chiu and the third victim.

Ms Chiu, who reportedly worked as a housekeeper, is then dragged underneath Mr Lee’s car which finally comes to a stop after crashing into some 30 scooters across a distance of 100 metres (330 feet), the footage shows.

Hsinchu police said Mr Chiu was freed from the vehicle and rushed to a local hospital, but she was pronounced dead after failed attempts to revive her.

Mr Lee, whose wife was in the front passenger seat at the time, was preparing to drive home after his spouse had finished a brief shopping run at Zhulian Market.

The authorities have yet to speculate on how Mr Lee might have lost control of his car.

The pensioner is to be charged with manslaughter as an investigation into the crash continues.
