Huge Statue Of Jesus Burns To Ashes In Lightning Strike

This is the moment a giant fibreglass statue of Jesus burns to the ground after it was struck by lightning.

The statue, made of fibreglass on a steel frame, measured 110 feet high and was built in 2013 to watch over the fishing port at La Concordia in the Mexican state of Chiapas.

Video footage taken moments after the lightning strike shows the statue, named Fisherman Christ, engulfed in smoke and flames against the night sky.

A second clip recorded the next morning on 10th September, shows just a mass of melted metal and ash on the hillside where the statue once stood.

Locals said the statue had been set ablaze by a lightning strike during a fierce thunderstorm.

The brutalist sculpture was created by Peruvian artist Pedro Víctor Cuya Ramos.

Local media described it as the fourth largest of its kind in the world.

It was built to protect local fishermen.

Bizarrely it was not the first time the statue had been hit by lightning.

Three years ago, it was rebuilt after a bolt took its head off and fried one of its arms.
