This is the moment two huge hydraulic cranes slide out of control along a shipyard dock before crashing into the sea causing a massive splash.

The accident took place at the North Star Shipyards in the borough of Tuzla in the north-western Turkish province of Istanbul and was filmed by a dock worker.

According to local media, two people were hospitalised in the incident although one of them has since been released.

Reports said that there could have been more casualties, but fortunately the incident happened while many workers were on lunch break.

Although it is currently unclear what caused the accident, it is believed that the cranes were not tested properly and were unable to handle the heavy load they were attempting to lift.

In the footage, a large crane on one side of a ship is seen sliding along the dock before crashing into the sea.

On the other side of the ship, another crane does exactly the same thing and crashes into the water with deafening noise.

According to local media, the incident caused a lot of material damage and wrecked an area holding two docked ships.

Paramedics were rushed to the scene, however the crane operators were unhurt and only two workers on the ground suffered minor injuries.

The Turkish Shipbuilders’ Association (GISBIR) said in a statement that teams of Tuzla police, firefighters and coast guard officials arrived to determine whether the accident caused a leakage or spilled waste into the sea.

Meanwhile, GISBIR chairman Murat Kiran said: “We are grateful that there were no casualties or case of pollution. All the relevant authorities intervened in time.”

The investigation is ongoing.
