The incident took place in the district of Seyhan in the southern Turkish province of Adana when the married couple, who already have a three-year-old daughter together, became embroiled in a row.
According to local media, the argument escalated and 26-year-old Abdulkadir C. beat up his 20-year-old wife Hikmiye A. and caused her to have a miscarriage.
Reports said that she was eight months pregnant with a baby girl at the time.
The husband quickly realised that the victim was in a bad way and subsequently rushed her to Adana City Hospital.
According to local media, doctors noticed signs of violence on the patient and decided to call the police.
Hikmiye was rushed into intensive care where she is reportedly still fighting for her life. Doctors were unable to do anything to save the unborn baby.
The local police have arrested the husband, who reportedly claimed that Hikmiye was having a nervous breakdown so he struck her several times in an attempt to bring her to her senses.
According to local media, relatives of the couple were shocked by the news and always considered the young couple, who first met four years ago, to be happy together.
Reports said that the suspect has been remanded in custody while an autopsy of the unborn baby should establish the exact cause of death.
Police also hope that the victim will regain consciousness so that she can assist with the ongoing investigation.
