This is the moment the weight of a fully-loaded gravel lorry breaks the surface of a poorly built road and the vehicle is swallowed by a sinkhole measuring more than 30 feet long.

CCTV footage dated 28th November shows the yellow construction site lorry passing through the county of Anxi in East China’s Anhui Province when the cave-in happens.

In the video, the heavy goods vehicle loaded with gravel and rocks overturns onto its right side and falls into the lorry-shaped hole in the ground as the road surface crumbles beneath it.

The sinkhole reportedly measuring more than 30 feet long and 15 feet across is big enough to swallow almost the entire lorry, which is left partially exposed as witnesses gather around it.

The driver of the lorry is not believed to have been harmed, with authorities later salvaging the vehicle with the help of an excavator and two mobile cranes.

Residents revealed that the road section where the cave-in occurred used to be much lower due to the local terrain.

Shopkeepers who wanted to expand the road decided to fill it themselves and raised the height by levelling it with a layer of concrete.

However, the lack of support beneath meant that the road section could only withstand the weight of light vehicles such as scooters and small cars.

It was not clear whether the work had been sanctioned by the local government.

Investigations are ongoing.
