This Hamburg player is under investigation for creating a false identity and age to enter Germany to take advantage of the more lax refugee laws for minors.

Hamburg’s Gambian forward Bakery Jatta is suspected of having lied about his name and age to enter Germany as it is much easier for underage refugees to enter the European country, according to a report released by local media.

The media report his real name is Bakary Daffeh and he is said to be two and a half years older than he claims, with his ‘real’ birthday being 6th November 1995 not 6th June 1998, which would mean he was an adult when he entered the country in 2015.

Local media also report he lied about his experience in football as the Gambian-born said he had never played professionally but two coaches have come forward stating the claims are false.

It is claimed he had played for Gambian club Brikama United, different clubs in Senegal and Nigeria and the under-20’s Gambian national team in 2014.

Reports state the German authorities are investigating the case.

According to local media, the team have not issued a statement but Bernd Hoffmann, Chief Executive Officer of Hamburg SV, came out showing support for the player.

He said they have Jatta’s “valid passport and residence permit in place” and he is “an impeccable sportsman and reliable teammate”.

Hamburg SV are entering through their second consecutive season in the German second division, Bundesliga 2, after more than five decades of playing top-flight football.

Bakery Jatta joined the ranks of the German team in 2016 and has started in 19 of Hamburg’s matches last year.
