A French chef has smashed the Guinness World Record for the number of cheeses on a regular-sized pizza by managing to cram 257 different kinds on one – including good old English Cheddar.
Benoit Bruel is the manager of Deliss Pizza on Paul Bert street in Lyon, the capital of France’s south-eastern Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region and these images show him putting his cheesy deliciousness of a pizza in the oven, smashing his own personal record of over 100 cheeses on a pizza, which he did last year.
The pizza weighed a whopping 730 grammes (1.6 lbs) and was just under 30 centimetres (11.8 inches) wide.
According to local media, his new record is currently being processed by Guinness World Records.
Reports also state that the cheesy dish is going on the menu at the Deliss Pizza joint, with diners expected to fork out around 50 EUR (42.50 GBP) to get their hands on one.
Among numerous other cheeses, this pizza is said to contain Brie from Meaux, Brin d’Amour, Forez brique, Buchette fermiere cerronnee, boulette d’Avesnes, Comte, Galet de la Loire, Normandy Camembert and even English Cheddar.
It is unclear what other cheeses the pizza contains, but given that France has well over 1,000 different cheeses, there is ample room for speculation.
Benoit is reportedly an expert of the Quattro Formaggio (Four Cheese) pizza, which is where it all started. He had at first posted a picture online over a year ago showing how he had made a pizza with 12 cheeses and a netizen challenged him to beat the world record, which is when he came up with his 100-cheese pizza.
Benoit, who is from Brittany originally, is quoted in local media as saying: “There are more than 1,000 cheeses in France. My uncle, Olivier is a fan of cheeses and when I was little, I often leafed through the Guinness Book with him.”
The previous record was held by Australian pizza maker Johnny di Francesco from Melbourne’s 400 Gradi restaurant with 154 cheeses.
