A nine-year-old girl has drowned after she was sucked into a pool drain by her hair at her grandmother’s birthday party.

Mariana dos Anjos Faria, 9, drowned after having her hair sucked down the drain of the swimming pool at a resort in the municipality of Dois Irmaos do Buriti in the west-central Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul on Saturday, 12th February.

The victim’s family is reportedly from the neighbouring municipality of Aquidauana, and they reportedly rented out the resort club for the young girl’s grandmother’s 75th birthday bash.

Mariana was not breathing when she was pulled from the swimming pool. Her hair was still stuck in the pool drain when she was retrieved from the pool and her dad, who has not been named, provided first aid at the edge of the swimming pool before medics took the victim to hospital.

Doctors were unable to revive her and she was declared dead.

Mariana’s school said on social media: “It is with immense pain in our hearts that we receive the news that our dear student Mariana dos Anjos Faria, from the fifth year, has gone to heaven.”

The young girl was set to be buried on Sunday 13th February.

It is currently unclear if the police are investigating the incident. It is also currently unclear how the young girl became trapped without anyone noticing and how long she was stuck underwater before her body was retrieved.
