An eight-year-old girl has died and a four-year-old child is fighting for her life after strong winds blew a bouncy castle across a fairground in Valencia during an event for Three Kings Day.

Nine children were reportedly injured when the bouncy castle was sent flying by strong gusts at the event in the city of Mislata in the eastern Spanish region of Valencia on the evening of 4th January.

Three children were reportedly playing on the inflatable attraction at the time.

Two young girls, aged eight and four, struck their heads on the ground during the incident and were hospitalised in a serious condition.

According to an update by the news site 20 Minutos today (5th January), the eight-year-old girl, name not reported, has succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

The four-year-old victim continues to fight for her life in intensive care while six other minors are receiving medical care for unspecified injuries.

When the incident took place, the emergency services sent 10 ambulances to the scene along with police units and firefighting teams.

The two seriously injured girls were taken to La Fe University and Polytechnic Hospital and Hospital Clinico Universitario de Valencia respectively.

Some parents also transported their less seriously injured children to hospitals in their own vehicles.

Mislata mayor Carlos Fernandez Bielsa said he was “shocked” by what happened, and wished well to those still recovering from the ordeal.

The National Police are investigating the tragic incident, which took place ahead of Three Kings Day on 6th January when Spanish families open their presents and celebrate Christmas similar to how other countries enjoy 25th December.
