A Georgia father has reportedly killed his 19-year-old daughter before turning the gun on himself.

The incident took place at the family home on Bridgemill in the city of Canton in Cherokee County in the US state of Georgia.

Howard Newhouse, 57, allegedly killed Kathryn Newhouse following a “tragic culmination” of her long-term mental health problems.

The authorities said they had both been arrested on separate occasions for attacking each other.

Police spokesperson Captain Jay Baker said: “When they [officers] arrived on scene, they discovered two deceased persons inside.

“It appears that a father shot his daughter and then took his own life.”

The teen’s mother was at home at the time of the shooting, but was unharmed.

The police said it is unclear what happened in the lead up to the shooting.

According to local media, Howard and Kathryn had previously been arrested in separate incidents.

On 9th April 2019, the father was accused of pinning his daughter on a bed by her throat. The misdemeanour charge was eventually resolved via pre-trial diversion on 30th April 2020.

On 28th January 2020, Kathryn reportedly smashed a cup on her dad’s hand and knocked it into his face, slashing his nose.

The case was dismissed after she underwent treatment, wrote an apology, and took a life skills course.

Her brother Chris Newhouse said she was a trans woman who battled mental health issues.

He said it was a “tragic culmination of all of these different mental health issues that kind of compounded and led to such an escalated to a situation that – it shouldn’t have happened, but it happened.”

Neighbours told local media that the police were called to the home numerous times in recent years, usually because of Kathryn’s mental health breakdowns.

Chris said the “serious screaming, hollering, physical violence” would “happen very frequently”.

He added that domestic life had become even more strained when Kathryn was released from a mental health facility before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chris said his sister was now “unburdened” from her mental health issues.
