He then allegedly kicked her in the stomach until her intestines were perforated, causing her to suffer internal bleeding. Her sister, 12, then called the emergency services.

The incident took place in the neighbourhood of Vila Santista, in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, on 7th March. The victim was taken to hospital, where she was intubated.

She died from a “generalised infection” on 9th March and she was buried in another municipality in the state of Sao Paulo two days later.

Anna Caroline was born in the municipality of Sorocaba and moved to Sao Paulo when she was 14, when she began a relationship with the suspect.

Her mother Priscila Valenca Reis, 41, told the news portal G1: “My daughter was in an abusive relationship for 12 years. He is very articulate and she had never had another man. A country girl, full of dreams. He would take her cards, lock her inside the house. If you had seen the state my daughter was in in her coffin, she was unrecognisable.”

Priscila revealed that her daughter had taken out a restraining order against her husband in 2019, but she decided to get back together with him.

The beating allegedly took place when she discovered her husband had cheated on her and she said she wanted to leave home.

According to Priscila, Anna Caroline managed to lock her daughter and little sister, who were present at the time, in a room so they did not have to witness the violence.

Following the crime, Anna Caroline’s husband fled the scene. At the time of reporting, he had not yet been found by the police.

Priscila said: “Her dream was to sing, she was a songwriter… [S]he managed to smile, even though she was next to a monster. She would call me every day, a wonderful girl, a wonderful mother. I still can’t believe it that she’s gone, my little doll.”

Anna Caroline had Crohn’s disease, for which she was undergoing treatment, and this may have worsened her health condition after the beating.

Priscila said: “He was aware that she had the most sensitive intestines and knew that she had almost lost a kidney. Now she is underground, alone. He’s killed an entire family, not just her.”
