Brazilian cops have arrested three men suspected of murdering a 71-year-old Catholic priest and stealing his Johnnie Walker Red Label whisky to have a drink to celebrate the crime.

The shocking incident took place at a parochial house in the Asa Norte area of the Brazilian capital Brasilia where Polish priest Kazimerz Wojno, known as Father Casemiro, was found dead with his hands and legs tied up and a wire wrapped around his chest.

The Civil Police report four suspects broke into the parochial house and tied both him and the homeowner up in order to rob them.

However, one of the gang, named in reports as Alessandro de Anchieta Silva, 19, allegedly began strangling the priest with a wire because he was annoyed that the priest kept telling them “they don’t need to do this”.

The homeowner, a church worker who has not been named but is 39 years old, was also tied up and told to keep his head down throughout the robbery. He told the police he did not see the priest being killed.

The police were called after the gang fled and Wojno was later found dead.

Investigators have now arrested three of the four suspects and they have been named as teenager Silva, who does not have a criminal record, Daniel Souza da Cruz, 29, who has a criminal record for murder and attempted bodily harm, and Antonio Willyan Almeida Santos, 32, who has a criminal record for murder and drug trafficking.

One suspect remains at large but the police say they have identified him and are searching for him. He has not been named in reports.

Investigator Laercio Rossetto said the gang, who allegedly stole laptops, a mobile phone and bottles of whisky from the home among other items, celebrated the crime with drinks.

Wojno was born in Poland but moved to Brazil in the 1980s, moving to the capital 25 years ago helping to build the Our Lady of Good Health parish. He had been ordained in the Catholic church as a priest for 46 years.

The investigation is ongoing and it is unclear if the suspects have been charged.
