This is the moment the roof of a Mexican shopping centre collapses as a woman runs for her life and avoids being crushed by a split second.

The incident took place at the Plaza Otay shopping centre in the city of Tijuana in the Mexican state of Baja California.

In the footage, a young woman is seen running for her life as the roof collapses around her and debris misses her by a split second.

Another clip shows the extent of the damage at the shopping centre after the roof collapsed.

The collapse reportedly killed one person and injured four others while over 500 people were evacuated from the premises by security staff.

Civil Protection officials in Tijuana said the victim was a 65-year-old woman.

After the emergency services were informed of the incident, firefighters, police officers, Civil Protection officials and units of the Mexican Army attended the scene.

A preliminary investigation concluded that a severe rainstorm and strong winds in the city earlier in the day caused the roof collapse.

During the storm, two other people were killed in the city when they were dragged by fast-moving water and sucked into the sewer system, according to the news site El Universal.

At least 30 road accidents were also reported in Tijuana during the storm and numerous homes lost power due to flooding.

The investigation into the collapse is ongoing.
