Local media report the recently-married couple died in the accident and Maleck, 20, was arrested after receiving treatment for light injuries, with Mexican prosecutors confirming an investigation into “homicide and culpable damage” had been launched.

Prosecutor Gerardo Octavio Solis told reporters that the footballer’s judicial situation would be decided today (Tuesday), adding: “The report is being put together, now there is a video where you can see the regrettable incident. The reports are almost finished.” Maleck remains in detention.

Reports suggest he tested positive for alcohol when he was arrested after the accident but this has not been confirmed by investigators.

The Mayor of Zapopan, Pablo Lemus, demanded that “the law be applied in full rigour to punish the irresponsibility that ended the lives of two innocent people.”

The striker was born in Mexico and started his career with Chivas de Guadalajara, having represented Mexico at under-18 and under-20 levels.

He is contracted to Mexican side Santos Laguna but spent last season on loan with Spanish side Sevilla Atletico, the B team to Sevilla, and he spent the previous season on loan at Porto’s B team.

His father is Jean Claude Maleck, a footballer born in Cameroon but of French nationality who played for Mexican sides Tecos and San Luis Futbol Club.

The investigation is ongoing.
