A key worker of Sinaloa Cartel drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman has been gunned down in a vicious attack where hitmen shot at him at least 50 times and injured a baby.
The brutal attack occurred in the municipality of Caborca in the Mexican state of Sonora on 26th December.
Local media said that Ignacio Paez Soto, 47, was shot at least 50 times while exiting a convenience store and heading back to his car.
Paez Soto is alleged to be one of El Chapo’s main operators and leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel in the Caborca region.
The 47-year-old was accompanied by an unnamed woman and her eight-month-old daughter who were inside his vehicle at the time of the shooting.
The eight-month-old baby was injured in one of her arms during the incident and is being treated at a local hospital.
The woman was not reported to be shot but still required medical attention after suffering a nervous breakdown.
Paez Soto had previously been arrested in 2014 on weapons charges and was later sentenced to 20 years in prison for drug-trafficking in 2016.
According to Spanish newspaper NIUS, Paez Soto was supposed to be in prison at the time of his assassination, however, it is unclear why he was not in police custody.
There have been no reports on suspects or on potential motives behind the vicious attack.
