A five-month-old baby girl has been attacked by a wild monkey that climbed through the bedroom window and even tried to drag her away.
The incident took place in a residential area in the city of Johor Bahru in the southern Malaysian state of Johor at around 11am on 20th December.
Siti Nur Asikin, 42, the mother of baby Aisyah Nur Zara Mohd Azmi, described how she left her daughter in the bedroom and was preparing milk in the kitchen when she suddenly heard screaming.
Siti said: “I rushed to the room to get her and was surprised to see a wild monkey enter through the window and sit on my baby’s back, that was about the same size of her, and start scratching her.
“When I tried to drive it away, including with a broomstick, the monkey seemed to pull my baby’s hand and wanted to take it away.”
Siti, who says her other two children aged 15 and 8 were also in the house, screamed aloud and a neighbour came to help her drive the animal away.
Siti said her neighbour was trying to comfort her when she saw her daughter’s clothes were ripped and bloody.
She said: “My husband was working away, so I drove the car to Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor Bahru for treatment.
“My neighbour lodged a complaint on the website of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.”
According to H Metro, baby Zara was given a rabies jab and will have to stay in the hospital for 14 days for observation.
Her mother said her baby daughter is in too much pain to sleep on her back so she sleeps on top of her.
Johor Wildlife director Salman Saaban said: “According to the preliminary investigation, there were three monkeys suspected of being involved and roaming the area.”
He added that one has already been captured, and the department will continue to set traps in the area and hunt for the other monkeys because they pose a threat to the public.”
