A 30 year-old British man has been arrested in Ibiza for allegedly trying to flee a drink-driving checkpoint and almost running over a traffic cop.

The incident took place in the area known as Sa Casilla, on Ibiza Island, one of the Balearic Islands in eastern Spain.

The Spanish Civil Guard had set up a drink driving checkpoint in the area when the Brit allegedly tried to avoid it.

Judicial sources told the media that the British man, whose name has not been revealed, was driving a rented small-sized car and ignored the stop signals from the cops.

In his alleged efforts to avoid the checkpoint, it is reported that he almost ran over one of the cops.

The man then allegedly continued driving before reportedly having an accident at San Tomas, only 1.1 kilometres away from the checkpoint area.

According to the media, cops from the traffic department at the Spanish Civil Guard then arrested the Brit who was ordered to take a breathalyser test which allegedly showed he was above the legal blood alcohol limit.

The driver was arrested and detained for two days before being sent to court.

He was then released after being charged with road safety offences.

According to local media, the same driver was arrested in 2017 when he was stopped by a drink driving checkpoint.

It has been reported that at the time he was unable to take a breathalyser test so he was escorted to a hospital where he allegedly attacked one of the hospital staff. It is unclear where the incident in 2017 took place.
