This is the moment a man catches fire and runs down the street in flames after he opens his car bonnet to inspect the engine.

The incident was filmed by a CCTV camera in the city of Ibague in the central western Colombian department of Tolima and shared on social media

In the footage, the motorist is seen stopping on the side of the road and lifting up his bonnet.

As thick smoke bellows from his engine, the man removes his top and appears to use it to put out the fire.

However, he disappears behind the bonnet for a moment before erupting in a fireball and running across the street ablaze.

Meanwhile, residents are seen appearing from doorway with fire extinguishers which they use to douse the flaming car.

According to local media, the motorist, identified as Carlos Alberto Huelgos Sierra, has been hospitalised in a critical condition with severe burns all over his body.

He is currently being treated at the Hospital Federico Lleras Acosta.

Following a preliminary investigation, it is believed that Huelgos Sierra somehow dislodged a fuel hose and doused himself in petrol.

The investigation is ongoing.
