Sports doctor Serge Dubeau says that pain will dictate whether or not Neymar will play for Paris Saint-Germain against Borussia Dortmund match in the Champions League.

The comments by Serge Dubeau, the former FC Girondins de Bordeaux (8th in L1) doctor, came after Thomas Tuchel, the PSG trainer, said on Tuesday he was not “100 percent” sure he could count on the 28-year-old Brazilian star and that he would not be rushing him back from injury.

Neymar is currently recovering from an injury to his ribs sustained in the 5-0 match against Montpellier leading to him missing out on PSG’s following two victories.

Dubeau added: “It will mainly depend on him and on how he feels.”

The doctor went on: “At this level, the bruise can cause pain or discomfort when he breaths in, when he sneezes or when he uses his rib cage.”

The doctor said: “The question is, can this prevent him from being at the top of his game? For ‘normal’ people, it is a grain of sand that would not be very disabling. But for an athlete, it can be experienced almost as if one was amputated. It is also a question of temperament, of being violent with oneself.

“I don’t know, for example, if [French former professional footballers] Jean-Pierre Papin or a Lilian Laslandes would have thrown in the towel over it…”

Serge Dubeau, 60, was the FC Girondins de Bordeaux doctor from 1990 to 2015.
