This is the moment a shopper appears to pick his nose and wipe it on a banknote which he then puts in his mouth twice before using to pay for his beer amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The unnamed man was filmed by a shop’s CCTV camera in Tlalpan, one of the 16 administrative boroughs of the Mexican capital Mexico City.

In the footage, the man puts two large bottles of beer on the counter before removing a wad of cash.

He leafs through the money and pulls out a banknote before apparently picking his nose.

The shopper then seems to stick some mucus on the banknote before briefly putting it in his mouth twice while waiting.

After the footage was widely shared on social media, the neighbourhood association Talpan Vecinos wrote on Twitter: “In the middle of a health emergency, a person carried out an unhealthy act with a note he used to pay for goods in a shop in Lomas Hidalgo.”

According to local media, Mexico City’s public prosecutor’s office urged the shop owner to report the incident to the police, although it is unclear whether they decided to file a complaint.

There have been 16,752 cases of COVID-19 and 1,569 related deaths in Mexico, according to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University.
