According to local media, 55-year-old Canadian John Bannerman dived into the water when he realised his sister and her friend were drowning in the sea.

Reports said the man managed to help his sister and the friend who was swimming with her, with the pair both making it back to shore.

However, Bannerman reportedly drowned as he became exhausted after helping the two women and he could not reach the shore.

The group of tourists was reportedly staying at a hotel in the beach area. The name of the resort and the names of the sister and her friend are not reported.

The beach was reportedly not being watched by a lifeguard as it was a private beach. It is unclear if it belonged to the hotel where they were staying or if the resort could be held accountable for the accident.

The 55-year-old man was helped by the National System of Civil Protection (SINAPROC) and by the Naval Service (SENAN).

The victim’s body was taken by local authorities to the morgue in the David district where it will be examined today.
