This is the moment a newborn baby that was abandoned on a church bench with its umbilical cord still attached is attended to by medics.

The incident happened over the weekend on Saturday afternoon when the baby was spotted lying on a pew in the cathedral of San Miguel Arcangel in the city of Orizaba, in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz.

Churchgoers called authorities after they found the baby lying on the wooden bench and realising that neither of its parents were among the gathered congregation.

The baby boy was round wrapped in a colourful blanket and still had the umbilical cord attached. He also had ink marks on one of his feet which indicated that he had probably been born in a public hospital which had recorded his name in writing on his skin.

The video shows the moment the baby is being attended to by medics from the Municipal Direction of Civil Protection on the wooden bench in the cathedral.

A woman can be heard in the background saying “he still has the umbilical cord? Oh my God!” and then “look his little mouth”. She is then heard saying “Have you informed the hospital?”

Officials confirmed to local media that the baby was in good health, and is being cared for by social workers.

Local prosecutor Alfredo Luna Toral, responsible for child and teenager matters, added that “the baby is already in the shelter of La Esperanza, where he is being attended while waiting for the judicial process to be done”.

He also confirmed that they were attempting to find the parents and appealed to anyone who might be able to help in doing so.
