A two-month-old baby has died after choking on a banana because the mother did not know infants are not supposed to be given solid foods before they are four to six months old.

According to the baby’s mother, identified as 27-year-old Yuni Sari from the sub-district of Kebon Jeruk in the city of West Jakarta in the south-western Indonesian special capital region of Jakarta, she only gave her tiny daughter two small spoons of banana.

Sari told local media: “Her twin is alright, but the elder sister choked, maybe it was her fate? I only gave them two baby spoons each, it is not like I force fed them the whole banana.”

Meanwhile, the police said there does not appear to be any signs of foul play in the tot’s death.

Police spokesperson Erick Sitepu said: “It began around 8pm, the victim’s mother attempted to give banana as weaning food using a spoon before she was going to be put [the twins] to bed.”

The baby’s parents found her dead the following morning, according to local media.

They took the baby to a nearby clinic who contacted the local police and Sari was taken in for questioning.

According to reports, the mother told cops that she was unaware that babies younger than four to six months old are not supposed to be given solid foods as their digestive system is still underdeveloped.

The baby’s body underwent an autopsy and a banana slice was reportedly found in her respiratory tract.

Even though death by negligence is a criminal offence in Indonesia, the police are currently viewing the baby’s death as purely accidental, according to local media.
