This is the moment a bungling driver reverses his Volkswagen off a 23-foot road with his wife in the passenger seat before landing upside down.
The dramatic accident happened in the village of Houdian, in Longquan City in East China’s Zhejiang Province, moments after driver Mr Zhao had finished visiting his in-laws on 10th January.
CCTV footage shows Mr Zhao preparing to drive away his VW Passat when instead of going forwards he reverses into the balustrades behind his parked car.
He pushes the stone balustrades down the elevated road, and his car hangs momentarily over the edge before plunging a reported 7 metres (23 feet) down the side of the wall.
Video taken by witnesses shows the Passat lying at the bottom of the drop on its roof.
Mr Zhao and his wife avoided serious injuries, and no others were harmed, local police said.
After the motorist crashed into the balustrades behind his car, he panicked and mistook his accelerator for the brake, reversing off the road, the authorities added.
Mr Zhao, who was returning to Shanghai with his wife, recalled: “We were on our way back to Shanghai when I reversed.
“A second later… I don’t know what happened. Luckily no one else was injured.”
Reports said Mr Zhao’s insurance company has written off his Passat.
Investigations are ongoing.
