Cops are investigating after a Manchester City supporter was reportedly left severely injured in hospital after an incident outside the stadium of their Champions League match in the Croatian capital.
The incident reportedly occurred outside the Maksimir Stadium in the Croatian capital of Zagreb where Manchester City beat Dinamo Zagreb 4-1 in their last Champions League group stage match of the season held on Wednesday 11th December at Maksimir Stadium.
Local police released a statement that said: “In the area of Maksimir, a UK citizen of 57 years of age was seriously injured and his medical care was provided at KBC (University Hospital Centre) Zagreb.
“A criminal investigation is underway to determine all the circumstances” adding that “ from a security point of view” things were “correct given that the match itself was played without incident”.
“However, given one isolated incident in which a foreign national was seriously injured, police officers from the Zagreb Police Department are conducting a criminal investigation to determine the circumstances that caused the injury.”
A spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office told Golder’s News and Sport that they could not provide further information on the case, adding: “We are not currently providing consular assistance in this case and our team in Croatia have not been contacted regarding the case.”
Local media report the Champions League match had an attendance of 29,400 spectators, 650 of whom were Manchester City supporters.
Manchester City recorded a resounding 4-1 victory with a hat-trick coming from Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus, 22, while academy prospect Phil Foden, 19, scored their fourth and final goal in the 84th minute.
Spanish winger Dani Olmo, 21, scored Dinamo’s only goal of the match in the 10th minute.
The injured fan’s name is currently unclear. It is unclear if the fan has been released from hospital or if he has flown back to the UK following the incident.
