The Christmas tree had only been erected on the square one week ago.

Reports said that firefighters attended the scene and managed to control the flames and eventually extinguish the fire within a few hours.

Meanwhile, netizens had a lot to say about the bungled fireworks display burning down the city’s Christmas tree.

Social media user ‘Velyeyo’ commented: “The truth is that they decided to use cheap fireworks which pose more of a risk of fire. The authorities should have bought better quality products.”

‘Chavamiramonte5’ said: “It is truly pathetic.”
